What Makes Diving in Tulum So Special? Cenotes, Reefs & Shark Encounters<\/h1><\/div>

Tulum has long been known for its cenotes, but spending time diving here made it clear that what really sets it apart is the variety. In the space of a single week, I moved between still, cathedral-like freshwater caverns, relaxed Caribbean reef dives and high-adrenaline bull shark encounters, each offering a completely different experience.<\/p>\n

This trip was about understanding what diving in Tulum, Mexico<\/strong><\/a> actually feels like as a diver, day to day, and why it now sits so naturally within the Sea to Sky Experiences portfolio.<\/p>\n

During this trip, the diving was carried out with Infinity2Diving, a locally based dive operation in Tulum that Sea to Sky works with for cenote and ocean diving in the region.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Cenote diving is what truly defines Tulum. These freshwater sinkholes, unique to Mexico\u2019s Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula, are calm, crystal clear and unlike any ocean dive.<\/p>\n

Some dives are immediately dramatic. Angelita drops to around 30 metres into a surreal hydrogen sulfide cloud, with an ancient fallen tree breaking through the mist below. It genuinely feels like hovering above another world. The Pit delivers towering light rays, haloclines and shifting gas layers that seem to shift around you as you descend.<\/p>\n

Others are more visual and relaxed. Carwash was a personal favourite, with beautiful light beams, lush plant life and curious freshwater terrapins. Casa Cenote offered shallow, scenic swim-throughs where freshwater meets the sea, along with a calm encounter with Panchito, the resident freshwater crocodile.<\/p>\n

At Dos Ojos, surfacing inside the famous Bat Cave, surrounded by hundreds of bats, was one of the most memorable surface intervals I have experienced anywhere.<\/p>\n

What surprised me most was how different each cenote felt. No two dives were the same, which kept the experience engaging throughout the week.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Tulum is not just about cenotes. Ocean diving here adds a completely different layer to the trip.<\/p>\n

A relaxed dive on Tulum Reef cruised vibrant coral formations filled with fan corals, lobsters, nudibranchs and spider crabs at around 15 metres. It was an easy, enjoyable contrast to the focus and precision of cenote diving.<\/p>\n

The adrenaline peak came with bull shark diving in Playa del Carmen. Dropping to around 25 metres and immediately finding ourselves surrounded by more than ten bull sharks was nothing short of spectacular. On the following reef dive, we even encountered bull sharks cruising the sand at just eight metres, which was unexpected and unforgettable.<\/p>\n

That contrast between still, technical cenote dives and close-range big animal encounters is exactly what makes diving in Tulum feel so complete.<\/p>\n<\/div>

One of the things that stood out most was how naturally the week flowed.<\/p>\n

Cenote days tend to start earlier and feel calm and deliberate, with a strong focus on buoyancy, awareness and light. Ocean days are warmer and more social, with surface intervals in the sun and a noticeably different pace.<\/p>\n

That balance keeps the experience varied without ever feeling rushed, which works particularly well for small-group diving.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Tulum\u2019s topside lifestyle complements the diving perfectly.<\/p>\n

Staying in La Veleta keeps things relaxed and local, with excellent food, coffee spots and easy evenings all within walking distance along Calle 7 Sur. The area has a laid-back, community feel that suits divers, somewhere to unwind, share stories and review photos after a long day underwater.<\/p>\n

While most places are walkable, scooters or bikes make it easy to reach the beach and explore further afield between dive days.<\/p>\n<\/div>
