New Moon Spawning
7 Nights and 10 Nights Itinerary
One of the best loved sightings among divers is the Bumphead Parrot Fish. Often seen patrolling the reefs in schools of up to 20 or more, these encounters are favourites for many divers, but imagine an aggregation of nearly a thousand individuals!
Our New Moon Expedition takes us to a remote dive site, where aggregations begin forming early in the morning. Awaiting the exact time for spawning, hundreds of Bumphead Parrot Fish from all around the area join one another for an unforgettable event.
Blue Lined Sea Breams also aggregate on the new moon.
Building up to this spectacular showdown, males begin their display of dominance, attempting to attract as many mating partners as possible. As females continue to gather, the school spills out into the blue where the tension erupts into a climatic mating dance.
During spawning itineraries, the Cruise Director will give a number of presentations in English about the unique spawning dives. These informative talks will cover everything from the ecology of these events to the best way to photograph them.
For the spawning dives, guests will be split into two teams of up to eight divers to witness these spectacular events, thereby maximising the experience and ensuring that we only observe, not interfere with, this spectacular behaviour.
IMPORTANT: In accordance with local regulations, all guests are required to dive with a guide at all times in Palau. We have 3 permanent dive guides on board to enable small dive groups of 5-6.
- Certification Level AOW minimum 50 dives and guests wishing to take part in spawning and/or blackwater dives (when offered) should ideally also have night diving experience.
Full Moon Spawning
7 Nights and 10 Nights Itinerary
For several days leading up to and around the full moon, two huge known aggregations of Red Snappers (Lutjanus bohar) spawn in two different locations. This event will lead us either to the historical island of Peleliu, or to remote dive sites east of Koror (divers’ preferences and weather condition will determine which site will be visited). We try to plan the spawning for the second half of the trip as aggregations occur at peak currents and can be challenging. The more dives you have under your belt when sexy time comes around, the better.
As the sun rises, we begin the dive. A huge aggregation of snapper will rise from the deep, to ensure the continuation of their species. Witnessing this natural behaviour, which only can be described as an underwater firework display of energy and excitement, is astonishing. It also attracts the biggest predators in Palau, such as bull sharks and oceanic blacktips.
- Certification Level AOW minimum 50 dives and guests wishing to take part in spawning and/or blackwater dives (when offered) should ideally also have night diving experience.
Important Information
Blackwater Diving
In addition to the spawning dives, on some itineraries we offer the opportunity to experience Blackwater Diving in Palau. Imagine rolling off the boat in the pitch black of night, sometimes many miles away from the shallow water of the reefs, to watch all manner of weird and wonderful creatures ascend from the depths towards the surface to feed.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
Diving on these itineraries is mostly within the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring a day at Peleliu.
The islands have narrow channels and current flows that change with the tides making navigation around some parts of the lagoon more ideally suited to the skiff tenders.
Additionally, Palau Siren and all other liveaboards in Palau are mandated to use specific mooring areas and anchorage points scattered around the Rock Islands, meaning that cruising within the lagoon and around the islands is minimal.
Dive groups are dropped off and picked up at the dives sites by the skiffs with transfer between the main vessel and most dive locations usually taking 5-15 minutes depending on where Palau Siren is anchored.
