Cozumel and Cancun offer gentle reef dives and great instruction.

Socorro is remote but highly professional – best for experienced divers.

Most resorts offer high-quality rentals, but photographers and pros may prefer their own kit.

It’s strongly recommended. Most liveaboards and dive centres ask for proof of dive insurance. Policies from providers like DAN or DiveAssure offer good coverage for diving-related incidents, including evacuation and chamber treatment.

Year-round, though late spring/summer offers great visibility and lighting.

Diving in Mexico is possible year-round, with warm waters, diverse marine life, and a wide range of dive environments. But depending on where you go – and what you want to see – some regions shine brightest at certain times of year.

Spring
(March – May)

  • Air Temp: 28–34°C
  • Water Temp: 24–27°C
  • Conditions: Warm and stable across most regions; excellent visibility in both cenotes and coastal dive sites.
  • Marine Life: Peak for whale sharks in La Paz; mantas and sharks still active in Socorro.

Great time for cenote diving and combining reef & big animal encounters.

Summer
(June–August)

  • Air Temp: 30–36°C
  • Water Temp: 27–30°C
  • Conditions: Hot on land but calm, clear seas in the Caribbean and Sea of Cortez.
  • Marine Life: Macro life thrives; Cozumel reef diving is at its most relaxed.

Ideal season for beginners, reef diving, and underwater photography.

Autumn
(September–November)

  • Air Temp: 28–34°C
  • Water Temp: 27–29°C
  • Conditions: Warm water and fewer crowds; good visibility in most regions.
