Food & Drink in the Maldives

  • Diving resorts in the Maldives offer a mix of buffet-style and à la carte dining, with a focus on fresh seafood, tropical fruit, and international cuisine to suit all tastes.

  • Popular local dishes include mas huni (smoked tuna with coconut), garudhiya (a fragrant fish broth), and rich curry dishes served with rice and chapati. Resorts also cater to Western palates, offering pasta, salads, grilled meats, and vegetarian options.

  • Alcohol is available at resort islands and liveaboards but is not permitted on local (inhabited) islands or in public places. Most divers stay at tourist resorts where alcohol is served legally.

  • Vegetarian and vegan diets are well catered for at most dive resorts, especially those geared toward international guests. Many also accommodate gluten-free or allergy-specific requirements.

Is the Maldives Safe for Divers & Travellers

Is the Maldives Safe for Divers & Travellers

  • The Maldives is considered safe and welcoming for travellers, especially at tourist islands and liveaboards which are separate from local populations and follow international standards.

  • Dive operations are well-regulated, with experienced guides, proper safety briefings, and access to recompression chambers in key areas including Malé and Addu.

  • Currents can be strong at certain dive sites, especially in channels – but these are always guided, with safety protocols in place. Most dive centres cater to all experience levels, offering calm dives for beginners and drift dives for the more adventurous.

  • Cultural note: the Maldives is a Muslim country, so modest dress is expected on local islands and in public areas. However, this does not apply on private resort islands or boats, where Western swimwear is completely acceptable.

FAQs

Yes! The Maldives is an incredible place to learn to dive. Warm, calm lagoons and excellent visibility make it ideal for beginners. We can arrange PADI or SSI courses in the Maldives so why not complete your Open Water, Advanced or Rescue whilst in the Maldives.

A shorty or 3mm wetsuit is usually more than enough. Water temperatures stay between 27-30°C year-round, so many divers are comfortable in rash vests or thin suits. If you get cold easily or plan on doing multiple dives a day, a 3mm full suit adds a bit of extra comfort.

Manta rays are seen year-round, but peak season runs from May to November, especially in areas like Hanifaru Bay (Baa Atoll) where plankton blooms attract large feeding groups. Liveaboards and resort-based trips often plan routes to maximise manta encounters during this time.

Absolutely. The Maldives is a fantastic destination even if you don’t dive. Many resorts offer snorkelling, spa treatments, sunset cruises, and paddleboarding, with house reefs just steps from your villa. It’s a perfect place for couples or mixed-activity groups.

Yes – many sites around resort islands are sheltered and shallow, making them ideal for new divers. However, some atolls and channels (especially in the Deep South) feature strong currents and are better suited to experienced divers. Your dive centre will match sites to your experience level.

It’s strongly recommended. Most liveaboards and dive centres ask for proof of dive insurance. Policies from providers like DAN or DiveAssure offer good coverage for diving-related incidents, including evacuation and chamber treatment.

There are plenty of options, but not all understand what divers need.

At Sea to Sky, we curate dive holidays based on first-hand experience – we are divers – and only recommend resorts, dive centres, and liveaboards we’ve personally trusted. Whether you’re learning to dive, chasing mantas, or exploring deep south channels, we’ll help you plan a safe, memorable Maldives dive trip
