Rising from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the Azores Islands form a remote volcanic archipelago located where three tectonic plates collide. This isolated position, combined with clear Atlantic waters and nutrient-rich currents, makes the Azores one of Europe’s most important pelagic hotspots.
The region is best known for offshore seamount diving, where migrating marine life gathers in open water. Expect encounters with large schools of mobula rays, blue sharks, tuna, and occasional whale sharks, alongside regular sightings of whales and dolphins throughout the season.

Baixa do Ambrósio
Located off Santa Maria, Ambrósio is widely regarded as one of the best pelagic dive sites in Europe. The seamount is famous for large, curious schools of mobula rays that circle divers suspended at depth, often accompanied by amberjacks and barracuda.
Jeremy adds:
“This is blue-water diving at its purest. Stay calm on the line, keep your movements slow, and let the mobulas come to you. The more relaxed you are, the closer the encounters tend to be.”
Formigas Islets and Dollabarat Reef
A remote marine reserve reached after a long Atlantic crossing. Visibility here can exceed 50 metres, revealing volcanic terrain populated by large dusky groupers, schooling tuna, and patrolling sharks along the deeper drop-offs.
Filomena adds:
“Formigas rewards awareness. Keep an eye on the blue as much as the reef, as pelagics often appear out of nowhere. It’s a great site for wide-angle photography when the light is right.”
Banco D. João de Castro
An active submarine volcano rising to within 12 metres of the surface. Divers descend into the crater itself, where hydrothermal vents release streams of gas bubbles, creating a unique volcanic diving environment alongside rays, turtles, and schooling fish.
Please note: This dive site is rarely dived, as it is dependent on many factors.
Jeremy adds:
“This is a very different kind of dive. Take your time in the crater and watch your buoyancy around the vents. The bubbles can be disorientating, but that’s part of what makes the site so memorable”
