Sea to Sky Expedition | February 2026

If you are searching for the best Raja Ampat liveaboard diving experience, our February 2026 journey aboard Ilike delivered everything we value about Indonesia’s most biodiverse destination.

Departing from Sorong Harbour, we explored Misool, Penemu, Yangeffo and Dampier Strait, diving legendary sites, spotting rare marine life and experiencing one of the most attentive liveaboard crews we have travelled with in Indonesia.

From the moment we stepped onboard, the Ilike team made the expedition seamless. Cabins were spotless, dive gear was consistently prepared, briefings were clear and relaxed, and by day two the crew somehow knew everyone’s preferences. It is that level of quiet professionalism that elevates a great dive trip into something genuinely memorable.

This guide shares our full itinerary, dive highlights, marine life sightings and practical insights for anyone planning a Raja Ampat liveaboard.

Why Choose Raja Ampat for Liveaboard Diving?

Why Choose Raja Ampat for Liveaboard Diving?

Raja Ampat sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle and is widely regarded as the most biodiverse marine ecosystem on Earth. It remains one of the most sought-after regions within our Indonesia diving holidays portfolio.

Nowhere else combines such density of coral species, reef fish, pelagics and rare macro life. The reefs are alive with movement. Soft corals glow under current. Schools of fusiliers and sweetlips move in layers above pristine reef structure.

But Raja Ampat is vast. The most spectacular reefs are spread across remote island groups, hidden channels and protected lagoons. A liveaboard is the only realistic way to access the full range of diving this region offers, particularly on specialist liveaboard diving holidays designed around route timing and marine life.

On a liveaboard you can:

  • Dive remote Misool reefs with very few other boats
  • Visit manta cleaning stations in the south
  • Explore mangrove lagoons and macro-rich shallows
  • Climb Penemu’s iconic viewpoint in the Fam Islands
  • Drift through fish-packed channels in Dampier Strait

Land-based resorts offer excellent diving, but they cannot match this level of flexibility or range.

At Sea to Sky, we curate Raja Ampat liveaboards around the diver, not the other way around. Route, boat and season matter. So does experience level, marine life preference and comfort expectations.

Marine Life Highlights

Marine Life Highlights

This expedition delivered genuine bucket-list sightings:

  • Oceanic manta rays
  • Mobula rays
  • Grey reef sharks
  • Wobbegong sharks
  • Sargassum frogfish
  • Ornate ghost pipefish
  • Bargibanti and Denise pygmy seahorses
  • Pikachu nudibranchs

Add turtles, napoleon wrasse, giant trevallies, dense bait balls and healthy reef systems in every direction.

Divers comparing manta seasons often also consider Maldives liveaboards or Red Sea liveaboards for similar big animal encounters.

Raja Ampat does not favour one style of diver. Macro photographers and wide-angle enthusiasts are equally rewarded.

Diving Conditions in February

For those planning a similar departure, February conditions were excellent.

  • Water temperature averaged 28-29°C.
  • Visibility ranged between 15-30 metres depending on site and tide.
  • Currents were present in Dampier Strait and parts of Misool but manageable for experienced divers.

This itinerary is best suited to Advanced Open Water divers comfortable with current and multi-dive days. Nitrox is strongly recommended for repetitive profiles.

Life Onboard Ilike

Life Onboard Ilike

A premium liveaboard is about more than dive sites. Organisation, safety and crew culture shape the week.

Ilike impressed us with:

  • Structured but relaxed dive briefings
  • Strong dive deck support
  • Camera care stations
  • Fresh, well-prepared meals daily
  • Efficient tank fills and gear handling
  • Genuine crew engagement

The team quickly understood diver preferences and dive styles. That consistency builds trust across a demanding itinerary.

For divers prioritising comfort, efficiency and service, Ilike sits firmly in the upper tier of Raja Ampat liveaboards.

When Is the Best Time to Dive Raja Ampat?

Raja Ampat is a year-round destination, but routing varies by season.

October to April is typically best for southern Misool routes.
May to September favours Dampier Strait and Wayag in the north.

February offered calm crossings, strong coral colour and productive manta activity in Misool.

Choosing the right season for the route you want is critical.

Planning a Raja Ampat Liveaboard

Raja Ampat is not a last-minute destination. The best boats and peak Misool departures fill well in advance.

Travel typically routes via Jakarta before connecting to Sorong. Most liveaboards operate seven to ten-night itineraries, and cabin categories vary significantly between vessels.

We dive the boats ourselves, build relationships with the crews and understand the seasonal routing. That allows us to match divers with the right expedition rather than simply the next available space.
